The STC Advantage

The advantages Southland Trailer Corp. has over other facilities is our in-house fabrication capabilities which allows us to “think outside the box” when designing or improving our products. Minimal outsourcing mean tighter control over production runs and the capabilities to implement customer feed back immediately during our prototyping phase.

We purchase material in bulk. This allows us to fabricate and store” kits” inhouse and stream lines the production run. When taking out the middle man, we have an increased communication between the project manager, engineer, and fab shop which has improved our product quality.

Team work ia an essential element of STC operations. Even though we have large facilities and over 100 employees, interdepartmental cooperation has enhanced our designs, decreased lead times, and increased production without getting other venders involved.

STC Today

Southland fabricates our entire product line in-house, which increases production and minimizes cost. Currently, at Southland Trailers we have divided our plant up into four main areas: Parts Fabrication, Fabrication Line, Prep/Paint Booth and Finishing Line.

Parts Fabrication

All of our steel parts are cut and fabricated here at the plant. With the state of the art Plasma table we have the capability to cut out a variety of small parts and pieces that need to be assembled to the trailer. In addition we also bend, cut and bind these parts if need be.

Fabrication Line

Our expert welders are skilled with all types of steel and various widths. Our in-house Brakes, Shears, Plasma Cutter and Punches add to our arsenal, giving us the capability of building and manufacturing to our customer’s needs. Southland’s experience allows us to do repair jobs, production welding and custom work.

Paint Booth

Southland Trailers Corp. has done some major renovations in the past year upgrading our paint operations with the new addition of our shot blast booth. We also provide the following range of product finishes: Primer, Wet Coat Paint, Baked Finish, Two Part Epoxy.

Finish Line

On the finish line we add the final touches to the trailer which include installing the flooring, aluminum skin application, electrical work, roof mounting, Tire assembly and the application of automotive under coating. This is where we customise any work, which includes additional doors, windows, vents, heater packages, electrical packages, custom colors etc.

Our Origins

For the past 30 years Southland Trailer Corp. has been an industry leader of trailer manufacturing in Western Canada for. We have grown to become one of the largest of steel product manufactures in Southern Alberta, with a customer base that stretches across Western Canada, the Territories, Ontario and several bordering US states.

Our vision is founded on quality and adding value to our product. Throughout our history, Southland Trailer Corp. has built solid relationships through our commitment to the quality of our product, and the customer service provided. This pattern of excellence continues today, and is the blueprint for our success tomorrow.

Beginings - The 80's

Southland Trailers began in 1980 manufacturing camper trailer frames in a 3000 square foot shop. In 1980, Monty Sailer, then 21 years old, started Southland Welding Ltd. he rented a 3000 sq/ft facility. He secured a contract with Scamper Canada, a recreational vehicle manufacturer, and produced R.V. chassis and trailer frames for them.

Four years later, with the demands for the product rising, the company expanded the operations. Within one year the company was forced to again increase the size of the operations to meet those needs.

In 1989, Lethbridge Truck Equipment was amalgamated with Southland and the company was moved to its current location. In 1995 an additional 10,000 square feet were added to the facility to handle the ever-increasing sales and production demands.

Growth and Expansion - The 90's

The year of 1999 saw an expansion of over 20,000 square feet was necessary, bringing the total size of the current facility to 70,000 square feet covering over 12 acres of land in Lethbridge, AB.

In 2001 Southland purchased the assets of RENN manufacturing and amalgamated it into it’s expanding product line. With a strong product  in the grain and gravel market the combination Of Renn and Southland made a significant impact

In 2002, Southland Trailer Corp was honoured by the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce by being selected as Business of the Year in the Manufacturing Category. In 2005 STC expanded further adding a 30 000 sq ft building on the 3 acres south of the main plant which provided the new location for Lethbridge Truck Equipment and a finishing department for custom trailers.

New Leadership and New Vision

Monty Sailer (Founder of STC) trained Ryan (his middle son) well over the years. On February 24th 2011, Ryan Sailer, General Manager of Southland Trailer Corp. won the NATM (National Association of Trailer Manufacturers) Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Ryan was part of the initial Project Team for Lean Manufacturing at STC (Project Consolidate), of which STC won an Alberta Manufacturing award Under Ryan’s Leadership as GM of STC he has taken the organization and manufacturing of trailers to a new level. Project Consolidate was only the start of the lean process and Ryan has been the ongoing leader. Notable to date in this process is the integration with an Enterprise Resource Planning system into the manufacturing environment and implementation of a new paint prepping process.
